opportunity
The high demand for music in peoples homes made the phonograph succeed because the records and cylinders both didn't cost as much as going and watching someone sing. The cylinders were pricey, there were many sold but not as many as disc records. The records were even cheaper then the cylinders and extremely cheaper then watching someone sing so many were sold 10s of millions more then the number of cylinders sold.
